How To Earn Passive income by Blogging

Long days have gone since people ran blogs simply to inform their friends of their college adventures or travels.

Pinterest is now becoming saturated with articles promising people that blogging is an easy and quick way to earn passive income.

It’s risky to go into blogging without an appropriate financial mindset, realistic goals, and an understanding of your overall personal finances! Thankfully Personal Capital provides a super easy and FREE way to track your spending, see your net worth, and help you learn about saving your earnings to reach financial freedom sooner!

No matter the situation, it is important to realize that blogging is a solid definition of side hustle! Too many are jumping into the opportunity, just to jump back out when it gets tough.

Therefore, since it is a popular option for income, I feel it is important for me to cover this topic and to help other women get the most realistic information to guide them to financial independence!

Like any other job or hobby, you won’t reach success and fulfillment if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing!

How Pinterest Provides Free Traffic

Pinterest provides a huge source of traffic for bloggers. It is a great search engine that brings in readers of your niche.

Did you find this article through Pinterest? Point proven!

If you are looking at becoming a blogger, or have an interest to grow your readership, know that Pinterest is pretty much a requirement.

In this post, I will not dive into how to set up a Pinterest or the details of owning an account, but will cover the topic of marketing expectations with Pinterest!

I have written an extensive guide about how to drastically improve your Pinterest practices on this free article here! This is a great resource to use as the next step from this article.

Manual Pinning with Pinterest

Manual pinning is literally going onto the Pinterest mobile application, or the desktop platform, and pinning/repining content.

As in, you are doing all the work. Each pin that gets pinned through your account is done by you. Is manual pinning bad? The answer is no.

However, manual pinning is a main source for blogger burnout.

Most bloggers do not survive the 3-month hurdle. It is discussed in many articles that bloggers have a significantly higher chance of success if they can consistently work at their blog for a full 3 months.

You may be asking, “ok, then how can I prevent blogger burnout?”

Take it from my own personal example:

After putting together great goals, setting appropriate expectations, and preparing content, this blog came into fruition! About two months went by and everything was going well…until the time constraint became too much.

To get an idea about manual pinning, it is important to understand how much pro bloggers actually pin:

  • Most bloggers I had connected with told me that an average of anywhere from 30-100 pins a day is appropriate
  • Pinterest isn’t a fan of you repining the same pins, so it is important to have numerous pins per post (or, maybe just a lot of posts!)
  • Lastly, you should not mass pin (pinning a bunch all at the same time), since Pinterest doesn’t like that either

Now, imagine trying to pin 100 pins a day, spread out throughout the day, and with enough pins to keep Pinterest’s algorithm happy.

I managed to stay on top of pinning copious amounts of pins (mostly others’ pins) for a solid number of weeks. You can see the results of the pinning through this screenshot from Pinterest Analytics:

Many new bloggers have a hard time getting past 10k impressions, but with extreme consistency, it can work.

Shortly after this screenshot was taken (Pinterest only shows up to 30 days prior to the current date), life got a little difficult and I was unable to keep up and my numbers tumbled quickly.

Using Tailwind to Boost Pinterest Traffic to Your Blog

Tailwind, a software for automatic posting on Pinterest and Instagram, will become your new best friend. Seriously.

While many other bloggers may tell you that Tailwind is great because it will boost your viewers by some crazy number like 1200%, it is important to be cautious and realistic with what you may experience with your own blog!

For those of you who are new to this platform, Tailwind literally pins your pins for you. You set up the schedule, decide which pins you want to be pinned at what day and time, and it becomes a pinning machine.

Once you familiarize yourself with Tailwind, you literally can schedule a week of pins within a few minutes. A few months of pins can be scheduled under one hour! (Based on my experience)

My favorite features of Tailwind:

  • Tribes– Tailwind Tribes are almost like Pinterest Group Boards. Tailwind members can join Tribes and other members are motivated to share your pins to their own boards. It significantly increases your repins! (Note that Tailwind is changing the name of Tribes in 2020).
  • SmartLoop– We have been playing with this feature recently and have found it to be helpful for spreading out content, which is necessary due to Pinterest’s algorithms. Tailwind’s SmartLoop is a feature where you can have them post your pins without repeating! As in, it will spread a pin out so it won’t repeat a single pin on a board until a full month after. This is good once you have plenty of pins.

1 Month of Tailwind Progress

So, you want to know if Tailwind works, right?

Have a look at screenshots from my first month of using Tailwind. During my first month using Tailwind, I had a huge influx of readers to my blog in comparison to previous months!

After dropping back down to 30k monthly viewers on Pinterest over a month ago with manual pinning, the numbers have now jumped back up and have surpassed the results I had when manually pinning around 50 pins a day!

Pinterest is a search engine, rather than a typical social media platform. With that said, once you stop posting on your blog, stop pinning, or quit putting up new content, your rankings will drop.

What’s great about Tailwind is that you will never have to worry about not pinning! It is automated and does it all for you!

Is Tailwind Worth the Cost?

So far, the answer is an absolute yes.

Understandably, it is hard for new bloggers to set more money aside (especially before you start earning anything), but Tailwind offers a great trial version!

It is FREE and will allow you to try out their features without any financial commitment.

Now, it is important to note that our results with Tailwind have not been extraordinarily amazing. I have saved a great amount of time, have gained many new followers quicker than before, and have increased my website users by a couple thousand over this past month!

However, there are many other bloggers who promote having had far better results. Some show having massive increases of viewers, clicks, repins, and saves. There is incredible potential!
